Great River Race Saturday, 8:30am start.  Watch giant canoes race down the Mississippi River. Organized by Wilderness Inquiry, the Great River Race is a fundraiser for UWCA (Urban Wilderness Canoe Adventures), an outdoor education program that organizes paddling field trips on the Mississippi River for Minneapolis and St. Paul public school students. Nearly 30 voyageur canoes, each paddled by 9 people, will set off in waves from Hidden Falls Regional Park.

Model Railroad Fair, State Fair Education Building, 9am-3pm. The Twin City Model Railroad Museum event is for hardcore model railroaders, but also fun for families. Lots of layouts to ogle and a Thomas the Tank Engine layout that kids can operate.  The cast from the Choo Choo Bob television show will also perform. $8 (free four and younger) 

Selby AvenueJazz Fest, Selby and Milton Avenues,11am-8pm.  A full day of neighborhood, regional, national and international jazz, soul food and family activities.

Loud at the Library "Farewell to Summer" Block Party, Central Library Courtyard, 1-5pm. Live music by Charlie Parr, The Brass Messengers, and The Poor Nobodys. Cash bar, food trucks and good friends in a fabulous outdoor setting. Show your library card for a free beer sponsored by Summit Brewing Company (with valid 21+ ID). Music starts at 2 p.m.

St. Paul Open Streets, University btwn Hamline & Marion Streets, 11am-6pm. Participants can explore the street that is open only to foot, bicycle and skate traffic. In addition to bicycling, walking and skating, there are programmed recreational activities for all ages along the street. Some of these activities might include yoga, zumba, games and dance lessons. There will also be musical performances and classes on bike safety and repair.

Open Cockpit Weekend, MSP Airport, 9am-3pm.  Climb into the cockpit of C130 cargo plane during open house at the Minnesota Air National Guard Museum. Beautiful cedar strip Voyageur canoes are built for comfort and ease. You’ll see eagles, heron, turtles with guide Lark Weller of the National Park Service .
